As the exit polls suggest, Jammu and Kashmir is on the cusp of a significant political shift. The National Conference (NC) appears poised to secure the largest number of seats, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress trailing behind. The possibility of an NC-Congress alliance seems the most likely post-election scenario. However, the potential for an unexpected NC-BJP alliance cannot be ruled out, reflecting the fluid nature of political alliances in Jammu and Kashmir.

Yet, the most intriguing aspect of this election is the growing influence of Independent candidates. In many constituencies, Independents are projected to outperform even established political parties. Their role in government formation could be pivotal, with these candidates holding the balance of power in a fractured political landscape. This emergence of Independents highlights the electorate’s frustration with traditional parties and their desire for new leadership that is more connected to grassroots concerns.

One name that stands out in this scenario is MY Tarigami, a seasoned politician with a proven track record of coalition-building. Should Tarigami win, his influence could be decisive in preventing a BJP-led government. Drawing from his experience in forging alliances like the People’s Democratic Forum (PDF) in 2002, he could once again unite diverse forces to create a broad-based government that reflects the aspirations of all sections of the Kashmiri population.

The possibility of an NC-BJP coalition remains, but such an alliance would face significant challenges, particularly in terms of reconciling the diverging political ideologies of the two parties. On the other hand, an NC-Congress partnership appears more natural, continuing the historical relationship between the two parties in the region. However, the inclusion of Independents and smaller parties in any future government could be crucial for ensuring a stable and representative administration.

As Kashmir stands at this political crossroads, the focus must remain on the future government’s ability to address the pressing issues facing the region—economic recovery, employment generation, and the restoration of political stability. Regardless of the electoral outcome, it is imperative that the new government places the people’s welfare at the forefront of its agenda.

In this moment of uncertainty, the electorate has delivered a clear message: they are tired of the old political formulas and are demanding leadership that genuinely reflects their needs and aspirations. Whether it’s through established parties or emerging Independents, the future government must heed this call for change.

Kashmir deserves a government that is both stable and inclusive, one that prioritizes peace, prosperity, and development. The post-election negotiations will determine the shape of that government, and with skilled leaders like Tarigami in the mix, there is hope that the region will see a government that truly works for the people.

Let us hope that whatever the outcome, Kashmir sees a government that can steer it towards a brighter and more harmonious future.
