Dr. Simin Akhter Naqvi was not just a person; she was a phenomenon. She embodied a spirit of revolution that inspired transformative change and left an indelible mark on all who crossed her path. Her life was a testament to courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to social justice.
Born and raised in Delhi, Dr. Naqvi came from a distinguished family of Naseerabad, Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, known for its strong tradition of education and public service. Despite her privileged upbringing, she dedicated her life to uplifting marginalized communities, reflecting extraordinary empathy and selflessness.
Since 2008, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Economics at Dr. Zakir Hussain College, University of Delhi, where her innovative approach to teaching profoundly influenced her students and colleagues alike. Beyond academia, Dr. Naqvi was a pioneer who believed in the power of education to transform societies, especially in underprivileged areas.
Dr. Naqvi shared a deep connection with Jammu and Kashmir, where she was not just an observer but an active participant in fostering development and advocating for the region’s welfare. She was profoundly concerned about the fragile ecosystem of Kashmir and consistently emphasized the importance of preserving its breathtaking natural beauty, from its lush green valleys and snow-capped mountains to its rivers and waterfalls. Her vision extended beyond environmental conservation; she championed sustainable development as the cornerstone of long-lasting prosperity for the region.
As a founding member of the Himalayan Welfare Organization (HWO), Dr. Naqvi played a pivotal role in shaping its mission. Her tireless efforts in education, health, and environmental protection transformed countless lives across Jammu and Kashmir. She stood as a beacon of hope during critical moments, such as the devastating 2014 Kashmir floods, where she worked tirelessly to support relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Her contributions to education were groundbreaking. As the mastermind behind HWO’s education movement, Dr. Naqvi’s visionary leadership helped bring learning opportunities to the remotest corners of Jammu and Kashmir, uplifting communities and fostering growth. Recognizing her unparalleled dedication, the inaugural Himalayan Green Award in 2018 was conferred upon her for her remarkable contributions to the education sector.
Dr. Naqvi’s association with HWO extended to all spheres of social welfare. Her relentless commitment to the causes of the marginalized, her advocacy for sustainable employment, and her dedication to protecting Kashmir’s heritage were unparalleled.
Her sudden demise on October 21, 2024, has left an immense void in our hearts. The Himalayan Welfare Organization and all those she touched mourn the loss of a true visionary. Her absence is deeply felt, but her legacy of selflessness, dedication, and transformation will continue to inspire generations.
Dr. Simin Akhter Naqvi was an exceptional scholar, an inspiring educator, and a compassionate social activist. Her unwavering dedication to the betterment of society, especially the oppressed, will forever remain a guiding light.
On behalf of the Himalayan Welfare Organization, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Naqvi family. We pray for her eternal peace and for her family to find the strength to endure this profound loss.
May Allah grant her the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and reward her for her selfless service to humanity. Ameen.
