The Reshaped Landscape

The contours of the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency were redrawn in 2022 by the Delimitation Commission. The exclusion of Pulwama and certain segments of Shopian was balanced by the inclusion of most of Rajouri and Poonch districts. The result is an 18-assembly-segment constituency that straddles both sides of the mighty Pir Panjal range.

The Candidates and Their Quest

Over 18.30 lakh eligible voters, including 8.99 lakh women and more than 81,000 first-time voters, are poised to shape the destiny of this region. The contest is fierce, with 20 candidates vying for the prestigious seat. Among them, the formidable Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister and PDP president, faces a tough challenge. Her opponents include Mian Altaf, an influential Gujjar leader representing the National Conference, and Zafar Iqbal Khan Manhas, backed by the Apni Party and the BJP. Additionally, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) leader Mohamad Saleem Parray and several Independent candidates add further complexity to the race.

Campaigning Amidst Turmoil

Despite the shadow of terror attacks, the democratic spirit prevails. Political parties and individual candidates have pressed on with their campaigns, undeterred by violence. The recent record-breaking turnouts in the Srinagar and Baramulla Lok Sabha seats have injected renewed energy into the electoral process. Leaders crisscross the constituency, addressing rallies, meeting voters, and making impassioned appeals for support.

The Abdullahs and Their Legacy

The Abdullah family, synonymous with Jammu and Kashmir politics, has left an indelible mark. National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, a seasoned campaigner, has rallied behind his son, Omar Abdullah, who contests from the Baramulla seat. Their commitment to the region’s welfare resonates with voters, transcending party lines.

Mehbooba Mufti’s Determination

Mehbooba Mufti, despite facing personal and political challenges, remains a formidable force. Her tenure as Chief Minister was marked by both acclaim and controversy. Now, she seeks to reclaim her political ground. Her party’s pro-Kashmir stance and emphasis on dialogue resonate with sections of the electorate.

The Gujjar Factor

Mian Altaf, representing the National Conference, embodies the aspirations of the Gujjar community. His influence extends beyond electoral politics, touching cultural and social spheres. His promise of inclusive development resonates with marginalized communities.

The BJP’s Calculated Move

Zafar Iqbal Khan Manhas, with BJP backing, aims to consolidate the party’s foothold in the region. The BJP’s abrogation of Article 370 and its promise of development have found supporters. Manhas, a seasoned politician, navigates the delicate balance between local aspirations and national imperatives.

Security Challenges and Voter Resilience

The border districts of Rajouri and Poonch have borne the brunt of terror attacks. The recent incidents, including the attack on an election rally in Mendhar, underscore the security challenges faced by voters and candidates alike. Yet, the resilience of the people remains unshaken. They defy threats and exercise their democratic right, determined to shape their own destiny.

The Way Forward

As polling day approaches, multi-layered security arrangements are in place. Officials express confidence in maintaining the trend of record-breaking voting set by central and north Kashmir. The people of Anantnag-Rajouri hold the power to shape the future of their region and contribute to the larger democratic fabric of India.

Remember, every vote counts. Let us exercise our democratic right responsibly and choose leaders who will work tirelessly for the welfare of our communities. The fate of Anantnag-Rajouri lies in our hands.
