The picturesque region of Kashmir, nestled amidst the majestic mountains, gushing rivers, serene lakes and soul soothing springs is a sign and symbol of hope. It gives an impression that no pain, no paucity and no pauper can reside in such an area.Pain is here; nevertheless, paucity is here and there are many paupers in the form of the large army of unemployed youth. Life for these unemployed youth is harsh, hopeless and unexciting. One side, either the Government is saturated or not serious about filling the vacant posts. On the other hand, the private sector, which could have served as a beacon of hope for the ambitious young minds, is regrettably almost non-existent.Only a handful of professions, such as the pharmaceuticals and drug industry, transport and telecommunications, provide limited employment prospects for the local youth. But unfortunately some of the recent decisions by the Government, Government Agencies and Government functionaries have reduced the job prospects of these sectors and have given birth to the threat of layoffs of the existing ones working there. The current state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir administration paints a grim and disheartening picture for the youth. There is no let down in the initiation and announcement of anti youth policy decisions and schemes. Every day begins with a bad decision from the government, adversely affecting the job prospects of the youth. The last to join with the torrent of such orders is from the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Saura. The institution issued a ban on certain medical professionals, pharmacists and representatives of drug companies, leaving them in utter dismay and in a state of despondency. The ban imposed by SKIMS targets every aspect of healthcare. The patient care is impacted, performance of doctors is impacted and the career prospects of the youth employed with the healthcare and drug industry.Generic medicines are a cheap option for the patients but the patients visiting this tertiary care facility require specialized treatment where branded and time tested medicines are the requirement. Therefore, the ban is unjustified and unjustifiable. The harms of ban far outweigh the benefits, if any, that could accrue to some portion of patients. So, this seemingly innocuous decision has far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the realm of healthcare. The employment and livelihood impacts on the youth are the worst of them. Therefore, the ramifications of this unfortunate decision are manifold. A relook on becomes obligatory. Especially the government which claims all for the youth of Kashmir needs to relook the decision. And thoroughly calculate the pros and cons of this decision.I am sure for any single benefit they will find many more cons if their analysis is sincere. Sincere institutions and people believe in introspection and after introspection the corrective actions whichever are found apt are initiated by them.In the same way our government, which we believe is since, will suspend the ban and allow the jobless people of this region a new lease of life, an opportunity to live an honorable existence, at least to the minimum degree.Furthermore, it is expected that the government takes all the necessary measures to generate more and more employment opportunities for the youth of the region. The state of joblessness have pushed many of them to the state of desperation where some of them have already started taking extreme steps reflected in the increased incidence of crimes and suicides rates.
