LoP Sunil Sharma seeks Speaker’s removal, says an “illegal and unconstitutional” resolution was allowed; BJP says it supports restoration of full statehood but opposes references to the 2000 autonomy resolution and the November 2024 special status resolution
Srinagar, Sep 29 (BuzzBytes): The Legislative Assembly on Tuesday witnessed uproarious scenes as BJP legislators protested against Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather over the Statehood resolution before staging a walkout from the House.
As soon as Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, according to , sought the removal of the Speaker, he alleged that an “illegal and unconstitutional” resolution had been allowed. Sharma said the Chief Minister had himself disclosed that the Law Department had given an opinion against discussion on the resolution and demanded that the Speaker take responsibility and step down.
The BJP opposed references to the 2000 autonomy resolution and the November 2024 special status resolution included in the Statehood resolution, while maintaining that it supports restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Responding to the objections, Speaker Rather asserted that he was aware of his powers and responsibilities and warned that strict action would be taken if members created disruptions. His remarks led to a heated exchange between the treasury benches and the opposition, with National Conference members raising “Vote Chor” slogans.
Amid the commotion, BJP legislators staged a walkout, protesting the Speaker’s decision to allow discussion on the Statehood resolution. The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was passed on Monday amid protests by BJP members—(BuzzBytes)
