In the shadowy corridors of Kashmiri politics, history appears to be on the verge of repeating itself. The echoes of the 1987 elections, marred by rigging and manipulation, reverberate ominously in the present. Are we, then, condemned to relive the turmoil and devastation that followed, or can we break free from the shackles of dynastic politics and forge a new path towards progress?

The events of 1987, where democracy was sacrificed at the altar of power-hungry elites, serve as a haunting reminder of what happens when political ambition trumps the will of the people. The promises of “Kashmiriyat,” “Insaniyat,” and “Jhamuriyat” were swiftly replaced by the dark clouds of Talibaniyat and tyranny, plunging the region into chaos and despair. The rigged elections of 1987 were the catalyst for the violence and bloodshed that followed, leaving deep scars on the psyche of the Kashmiri people.

Fast forward to today, and we find ourselves at a crossroads once again. Farooq Abdullah’s recent call for “vote jihad” and appeals to the youth for jihad are alarming echoes of the past. These inflammatory statements, made by a seasoned politician who should know better, are a thinly veiled attempt to revive the divisive politics of yesteryear. But must we allow history to dictate our future? Must we sacrifice the hard-won peace and stability of post-August 5, 2019, Kashmir at the altar of dynastic power struggles?

The answer, unequivocally, is no. We must break free from the cycle of violence and oppression perpetuated by dynastic politics. The recent strides towards peace and prosperity in Kashmir cannot be jeopardized for the sake of political expediency. The region has suffered enough at the hands of self-serving political elites, who have prioritized their own interests over the well-being of the people.

It’s time to reject the siren song of dynastic politics and embrace a future where the voices of the people are heard and respected. A future where the aspirations of all Kashmiris, regardless of their political beliefs or affiliations, can flourish. A future where the region’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty can be leveraged to build a prosperous and peaceful society.

The recent surge in tourism, with over 2.5 crore visitors flocking to the region, is a testament to the potential that Kashmir holds. The economic boom that has followed, with hoteliers and small businesses thriving, is a welcome respite from the darkness of the past. But this progress must not be taken for granted. We must continue to work towards a future where such prosperity is not limited to a select few, but is inclusive and equitable for all.

As we navigate the complex political landscape of Kashmir, it’s essential to remember that the region’s problems are not solely the result of external factors, but also of internal dynamics. The stranglehold of dynastic politics has stifled the growth of new leaders and ideas, perpetuating a culture of nepotism and corruption. It’s time to challenge this status quo and create space for fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.

In conclusion, as we stand at this critical juncture in Kashmir’s history, we must choose between the darkness of the past and the promise of a brighter future. We must reject the divisive politics of dynastic elites, including Farooq Abdullah’s call for jihad, and embrace a new era of inclusivity, progress, and peace. The people of Kashmir have suffered enough; it’s time for their voices to be heard, and their aspirations to be respected. Let us break free from the chains of dynastic politics and build a Kashmir where all can thrive.
