The Kashmir Valley is known across the world for its unmatched beauty, serene landscapes, and warm hospitality. Among its many natural treasures, Verinag stands as one of the most charming and peaceful destinations in the district of Anantnag. It is not merely a tourist spot; it is a place where nature speaks softly to the soul, where rivers flow with purpose, and where mountains stand tall like silent guardians of paradise on earth.

Verinag is often described as a place where visitors feel like angels walking through paradise. The crystal-clear waters of the spring flow gently onward, offering calm and comfort to all who arrive. The sound of flowing water soothes the troubled mind and refreshes the weary spirit. Snow-clad mountains in the background create a bridal image, as if nature itself is dressed for celebration. Lush green pine trees stand upright like decorative candles placed carefully by an artist, spreading their charm far into the distance.

The lofty waterfalls in the upper reaches descend gracefully, creating a breathtaking view. The surrounding vegetation is mesmerizing, carrying a natural fragrance that seems to ease a restless mind. In summer, the meadows turn into soft green carpets that draw visitors from every corner of the world. They offer peace, comfort, and lasting memories. Each season paints the valley differently — spring brings freshness, summer spreads greenery, autumn showers golden hues, and winter covers everything in silent white.

Nature lovers preserve these scenes in memory, holding onto each beautiful moment for quieter days. The Kashmir Valley is rare and richly blessed. Its global fame is both genuine and deserved. Along with natural beauty, the warmth and hospitality of the people add life to the landscape. Visitors are often touched by the kindness of the locals.

Kashmir is also known for its four distinct seasons — spring, summer, autumn, and winter — each with its own character and charm. Tourists visit throughout the year, and most leave with the same thought: there is truly no place like Kashmir.

A Visit to Verinag in Winter

In this article, I share my personal experience of visiting Verinag during the harsh winter season. On 22nd January 2025, I visited Verinag with my parents after meeting a close relative in Shahabad Dooru. My parents had never been there before, which became the main reason for our visit — even though it was the peak of Chillai Kallan, the harshest phase of winter in Kashmir.

Generally, locals avoid recreational visits during winter because of freezing temperatures. People prefer to remain indoors, protecting themselves from the cold waves. Yet for true lovers of nature, all 365 days of the year hold their own charm in the Kashmir Valley.

From our relative’s house, it took about thirty minutes to reach Verinag. We parked outside the garden, paid the entry fee, and entered through the main gate. The gate remains open throughout the day, as locals often visit the spring to collect water for daily use.

The moment I entered, I felt as if I were seeing the place for the first time. Winter had transformed the atmosphere completely. The sound of water echoed more clearly in the stillness. Cold waves touched my face, ears, and hands, leaving them numb. The air felt sharp, pure, and refreshing.

The spring appeared calm and patient, as if waiting quietly for summer’s return. It felt almost as though it whispered, “Where is summer? I miss the laughter and gathering of people.” During summer, the place is crowded with visitors, but in winter, a peaceful emptiness prevails. It seemed as if the spring itself longed for the cheerful noise and lively presence of tourists.

Summer and Winter at Verinag

The contrast between summer and winter at Verinag is striking.

During summer, the garden fills with visitors. Conversations and laughter create a lively atmosphere. Some search for perfect spots to take photographs against blue waters and green surroundings. Others sit quietly on benches, enjoying the cool breeze. Families gather for picnics, sharing tea and meals. Children run about joyfully, filling the place with energy.

In winter, the scene changes completely. Silence settles over the garden. When I visited, only a few people were present. I jokingly felt like a VIP, granted exclusive access to this beautiful place. The emptiness allowed me to observe every detail — the gentle ripples of water, reflections of trees, and the steady rhythm of nature undisturbed by noise.

Winter gives Verinag a distinct charm. Though the trees appear less vibrant and the air is freezing, the calmness creates a deeper connection with nature. Without crowds, visitors can experience true solitude and peace.

Why Verinag is Famous

Verinag holds both historical and geographical importance. It is believed to be the origin of the River Jhelum, one of South Asia’s major rivers. In ancient Sanskrit texts, the river was known as Vitasta. The Jhelum flows through the Kashmir Valley, then through Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and finally into the Punjab region of Pakistan, covering more than 700 kilometers.

Mughal Emperor Jahangir recognised the beauty of Verinag and developed it into a Mughal garden in the 16th century. He ordered the construction of an elegant octagonal stone basin around the spring. His son, Emperor Shah Jahan, further enhanced its beauty.

Surrounded by pine forests and the majestic Pir Panjal range, Verinag offers visitors deep tranquility. Even in the heat of July, the spring water remains cold and crystal clear. Its greenish shade, along with fish swimming within, enhances its charm and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Located in Tehsil Shahabad Bala of District Anantnag, Verinag holds importance for both tourists and local residents. It represents natural beauty, historical heritage, and spiritual calmness.

Conclusion

Verinag is more than a tourist destination. It is a place where nature heals, history speaks, and silence comforts the heart. Whether in lively summer or quiet winter, Verinag never fails to enchant its visitors. My winter visit offered a new perspective and deepened my appreciation of its peaceful beauty.

The Kashmir Valley, with its enchanting landscapes and warm-hearted people, truly deserves its title as “Paradise on Earth.” Among its many gems, Verinag shines brightly, inviting visitors from across the world to witness its timeless charm.
