The recent remarks by senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on the abrogation of Article 370 have added a new layer to an already complex political landscape. Speaking during an interaction with a delegation in Indonesia, Khurshid described the removal of Article 370 as a step that ended the long-standing perception of Jammu and Kashmir being a “separate entity.” He further highlighted the high voter turnout and the return of an elected government as signs of growing stability and prosperity in the region.
These are strong and clear words — and they deserve attention.
At the same time, the Congress party remains in a political alliance in Jammu and Kashmir with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), a party that has repeatedly called for the restoration of the special status that Article 370 once provided. In fact, the JKNC has even passed a resolution in the Assembly demanding its reinstatement.
This duality has raised questions. Can a party endorse the abrogation of Article 370 on one platform while supporting its reversal on another? The contrast in positions has led to understandable confusion, not just among political observers, but also among the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Coalition politics in India often requires compromise and accommodation of diverse views. However, when it comes to issues as sensitive and fundamental as Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status, consistency becomes vital. Voters expect clarity of thought and position, especially on matters related to national integration and regional identity.
The Congress must consider whether its current approach — which appears to walk two paths — is sustainable or even desirable. Political maturity lies not just in alliance-building but also in owning a coherent and transparent stand.
Salman Khurshid’s remarks may well reflect a view held by many within the party, but for it to carry weight, the Congress must communicate its position unambiguously. Ambiguity on such a critical issue only invites mistrust.
At a time when Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a return to electoral participation and relative calm, it is crucial for national parties to demonstrate sincerity and unity of message. The people deserve nothing less.
