District Administration in Pulwama Takes Decisive Steps to Combat Drug Menace

In a resolute move, the District Level Committee of Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) convened a crucial meeting under the dynamic leadership of Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom (IAS), aimed at formulating a comprehensive action plan to combat the pressing issues of drug abuse.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Basharat Qayoom shed light on the gravity of the situation, delving into critical aspects such as the prevalence of drug addiction, the affected age groups, locations prone to drug peddling, and the cultivation of illicit substances. Urging all line departments, especially NCORD members, he called for intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking and emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among various government bodies.

The Deputy Commissioner underscored the significance of conducting extensive awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate the youth about the dangers of drug consumption. He advocated for a united front from all departments to break the supply chain, take strict action against those involved in drug trade, and implement a multi-faceted rehabilitation, counseling, and guidance policy.

Recognizing the pivotal role of families, Dr. Basharat Qayoom sought cooperation from parents and religious leaders in keeping youngsters away from drugs. He emphasized the need for a collective effort to address not only drug abuse but also the associated social issues and crimes.

Pledging unwavering support, the Deputy Commissioner assured assistance from the District administration to save the youth from the adverse effects of drugs. During the meeting, officers provided updates on the current drug menace situation, offering suggestions and proposing measures for the rehabilitation of drug victims.

As part of a comprehensive strategy, enforcement measures, including FIRs, property attachments, and reducing areas under illicit crops, were reviewed. The Deputy Commissioner was briefed on the lodging of 114 FIRs and the attachment of 6 properties, aligning with prior directives against offenders. Additionally, he stressed the importance of developing an annual plan to comprehensively address the challenges of drug abuse, encompassing coordinated enforcement actions, awareness campaigns, rehabilitation initiatives, monitoring mechanisms, and transitioning to sustainable crops.

In a proactive move, the Deputy Commissioner directed the social welfare department to submit a proposal for a rehabilitation center for drug de-addiction at the district headquarters, adhering to scheme guidelines. He further stressed the establishment of rehabilitation centers across the district. Revenue authorities were instructed to issue notices against the cultivation of illicit poppy and cannabis in the district, signaling the administration’s commitment to curbing the root causes of the drug problem.

The meeting stands as a testament to the unwavering resolution of the District Administration in creating a drug-free environment, safeguarding the well-being of the community, and fostering a brighter future for the youth.
