Srinagar, February 14, 2024:The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Srinagar conducted an inspection of the Central Jail, Srinagar, and monitored the progress of the pan-India campaign aimed at identifying juveniles in prisons and providing them with legal assistance.Under the guidance of Chairman (PDJ) DLSA, Srinagar, Jawad Ahmed, the inspection was led by Secretary DLSA Srinagar, Jahangir Ahmed Bakshi, accompanied by officials, LADCs, and a female panel lawyer of DLSA Srinagar.The primary objective of the inspection was to evaluate the status of the identification process, ensure timely and effective legal assistance for juveniles, and address any challenges faced by the jail authorities in implementing the nationwide campaign.During the visit, the DLSA team, along with the superintendent and prison staff, toured all the barracks, engaged with jail inmates, including females, listened to their grievances, and received feedback on the services provided by DLSA Srinagar. They also assessed the existing infrastructure and facilities, including access to education, healthcare, and counseling services for the inmates.The DLSA team provided guidance and support to the jail authorities, emphasizing the importance of effectively implementing the PAN India campaign and ensuring the protection of the rights of juvenile inmates. They highlighted the necessity of providing juveniles with access to legal representation, counseling, and other support services to help them navigate the criminal justice system.The inspection concluded with a discussion between the DLSA team and the jail superintendent, where findings were discussed, and assurances were made to address genuine grievances on a priority basis.DLSA Srinagar remains committed to ensuring that juveniles and other jail inmates have access to justice, and the nationwide campaign plays a pivotal role in upholding the rights of juveniles within the prison system.
