Farooq Abdullah on Thursday called upon the Women’s Wing of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference to intensify grassroots outreach and strengthen organisational presence ahead of forthcoming Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Dr Abdullah chaired a day-long provincial meeting of the party’s Women’s Wing at the NC headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, in Srinagar.
The meeting was organised under the leadership of Women’s Wing President Shameema Firdous and convened by Provincial President Women’s Wing Er. Sabiya Qadri.
Senior party leaders, including General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, Treasurer Shammi Oberoi and Provincial President Showkat Mir, attended the four-hour meeting along with district presidents and office-bearers from across Kashmir province.
Detailed discussions were held on strengthening organisational outreach at booth and ward levels, enhancing women’s political participation and reinforcing the institutional structure of the Women’s Wing.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Farooq Abdullah said the Omar Abdullah-led government has consistently prioritised public welfare and women’s empowerment through targeted socio-economic measures.
“The Omar Abdullah government is working so that welfare reaches the last mile, especially women who form the backbone of our society. Our focus has remained on empowerment through education, economic support and dignity-oriented governance,” he said.
The NC president said the government’s initiatives aimed at strengthening livelihood opportunities, supporting vulnerable families and promoting self-employment schemes were laying the foundation for inclusive growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
Without directly naming specific schemes, Dr Abdullah also highlighted measures related to mobility support for women and financial assistance for economically weaker families, describing them as part of the party’s broader commitment to social justice and equitable development.
He stressed the importance of encouraging women’s participation in entrepreneurship and self-help initiatives to ensure long-term financial independence and socio-economic upliftment.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthen organisational unity, expand public outreach and advance the party’s pro-people and pro-women agenda across Jammu and Kashmir.
