Srinagar:Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, inaugurated a three-day training program under the HADP Project, focusing on “Agroforestry:
An Important Constituent of Organic Farming System.” The event aims to unite farmers, researchers and experts to explore the vital role of agroforestry in promoting sustainable and organic farming practices.
The inaugural event attended by progressive farmers, rural youth and students was graced by Prof. S. A. Gangoo, Dean Faculty of Forestry SKUAST-Kashmir and chief guest, Prof. A. H. Muhgal, Associate Director Research SKUAST-Kashmir and Dr. G. M. Bhat, professor & Head division of SAF, Faculty of Forestry. Their presence underscored the importance of the initiative and provided encouragement to the participants.
Dr. Nazir A. Pala, the program coordinator emphasized on the significance of integrating agroforestry into organic farming systems. Prof. G. M. Bhat, Head of the Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry, spoke on the foundational principles of agroforestry and its integration into sustainable farming systems.
He provided an in-depth overview of the ecological benefits and long-term economic gains of adopting agroforestry practices, presenting case studies of successful agroforestry models implemented in different regions. He shared insights into the challenges faced and solutions adopted by farmers, offering valuable lessons for the participants. Prof. S. A. Gangoo, Dean Faculty of Forestry, emphasized on the importance of agroforestry practices for doubling farmers’ income and shared his vast experience with the participants.
Prof. A. H. Mughal highlighted the need to shift from use of fertilizers to organic farming due to its long term benefits apart from enhancing biodiversity, improving soil health, increasing crop yields and providing additional income sources for farmers through the cultivation of trees and shrubs alongside traditional crops. The inaugural session was concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Prof. Vaishnu Dutt. After the inaugural session other scientists including Dr. Tariq Rather, Dr. Megna Rashid and Dr. Peerzada Ishtiyak delivered their valuable talks to the participants.
