PUNE, Dec 20: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday stated that the global economic and political pecking order has undergone a significant transformation, with multiple centres of power and influence emerging across the world. Addressing the 22nd convocation of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) here, he emphasised that no country, however powerful, can impose its will on all issues anymore.
Jaishankar highlighted that this shift has introduced a natural competition among nations, creating its own balance in international relations. He noted that the very idea of power now encompasses diverse definitions including trade, energy, military capabilities, resources, technology and talent, making it a particularly complex phenomenon in today’s multipolar world.
“It is also essential to recognize that global powers are no longer capable of being universal,” the External Affairs Minister asserted, pointing to the limitations of even the most dominant players in exerting blanket influence across all domains.
The minister further observed that globalisation has fundamentally altered the way nations think and work, reshaping economic strategies and diplomatic engagements. In this context, he stressed the need for large economies like India to develop substantial and contemporary manufacturing capabilities to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.
Jaishankar’s remarks underscore India’s evolving perspective on global affairs amid rising geopolitical complexities, advocating for self-reliance in critical sectors to navigate the emerging world order effectively. The convocation address comes at a time when India is positioning itself as a key player in multiple global forums, balancing competition with cooperation on the international stage.
