Amid recent social media concerns over LPG availability, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that household cooking gas supply across India continues uninterrupted and is being given absolute priority. The current challenges stem from temporary disruptions in international shipping routes, not from any domestic shortfall in production or distribution infrastructure.
India currently has more than 33 crore active domestic LPG connections, serving nearly every household in the country. This massive network, built over the last decade through schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, is fully supported by 210 LPG bottling plants operated by public sector oil marketing companies (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) with a combined capacity of 22.4 million metric tonnes per annum.
These plants are functioning at full capacity, with cylinder refilling and dispatch operations continuing round the clock. In response to global supply chain pressures, the government directed refineries to maximise domestic LPG output, resulting in a 25 per cent increase in production. All additional volumes are being channelled exclusively to household consumers.
Furthermore, the Essential Commodities Act has been invoked to ensure fair distribution and prevent hoarding. Two Indian-flagged LPG carriers carrying 92,700 tonnes have already crossed key maritime routes and are expected to dock shortly, providing further buffer stock.
National storage tankage offers approximately 15–18 days of cover, giving the system resilience against short-term fluctuations. Over 25,600 distributors are actively serving households, and surprise inspections are being intensified to curb black-marketing of commercial cylinders.
Queues visible at some agencies are largely driven by precautionary panic booking rather than actual scarcity of domestic supply. The Petroleum Ministry has emphasised that commercial LPG (used by hotels and restaurants) is being managed through separate arrangements, while household refills remain unaffected.
Consumers are urged to book cylinders only when their current stock is low and to use the official apps for transparent tracking. The government continues to monitor the situation closely in coordination with oil companies and state administrations.
This proactive, multi-pronged approach—boosting domestic production, prioritising households, accelerating imports, and strengthening monitoring—ensures that India’s 33 crore households continue to receive clean cooking fuel without disruption.
Citizens are requested to rely on verified updates and avoid spreading unconfirmed visuals that create unnecessary anxiety. The domestic LPG ecosystem remains robust and fully operational.
