BuzzBytes New Delhi, 08 FEB 2024:The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the decision to eliminate the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar. The move is aimed at safeguarding the internal security of the country and preserving the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States that share borders with Myanmar.Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, expressed in a statement on ‘X’ that this decision aligns with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s commitment to securing India’s borders. He stated, “It is Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s resolve to secure our borders, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided that the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar be scrapped to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States bordering Myanmar. Since the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping it, MHA has recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR.”The scrapping of the FMR is part of a strategic initiative to reinforce national security measures and protect the socio-economic fabric of the North Eastern regions bordering Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs is actively involved in the process of implementing this decision, with the MHA emphasizing the immediate suspension of the Free Movement Regime.
