Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that infiltration into Assam is not merely an electoral issue but a serious matter concerning national security and the protection of the state’s identity, while launching a sharp attack on the Congress.
Addressing BJP booth-level workers virtually under the ‘Mera Booth, Sabse Mazboot Samvaad’ initiative ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, the Prime Minister accused the Congress of allowing illegal land grabbing by infiltrators and neglecting the rights of indigenous people.
“Infiltration is not just an election issue. It is about safeguarding the identity of Assam and national security. Congress allowed illegal encroachments, while the BJP is protecting the rights of the people,” Modi said.
He urged party workers to raise awareness among voters, especially first-time voters, about what he termed the “misrule” of previous Congress governments and cautioned that even a small mistake could push the state back into instability.
Referring to the past, Modi said Assam had witnessed prolonged periods of violence and unrest but added that the situation has significantly improved over the last decade under the BJP’s “double-engine” government.
“We have seen the era when Assam was burning. Today, there is a new confidence as peace and stability have been restored through sincere efforts,” he said, adding that peace is the foundation for development.
The Prime Minister highlighted that his government has signed 12 peace agreements with various organisations in the Northeast and is implementing them on the ground, in contrast to earlier regimes which, he alleged, signed agreements only for headlines.
He also referred to the transformation in Bodoland, stating that the region, once marked by violence, curfews and bomb blasts, is now witnessing peace and development, emerging as a model for the country.
Modi asked BJP workers to connect with local communities, including those in tea garden areas, and organise grassroots-level interactions such as ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ to understand people’s concerns and share the government’s achievements.
He emphasised the importance of countering misinformation, particularly AI-generated content, and urged party workers to spread awareness about government initiatives through digital platforms, including the NaMo App.
Highlighting welfare measures, the Prime Minister mentioned schemes such as Orunodoi and Lakhpati Didi, stating that these initiatives are empowering women and improving livelihoods across the state.
He said land rights provided to tea garden workers would secure the future of thousands of families and ensure dignity, while also alleging that some states are not effectively implementing central schemes.
Calling for collective effort, Modi said BJP workers are working towards securing a third consecutive term for the NDA government in Assam, asserting that peace, development and good governance remain the key priorities.
The Assam Assembly elections for 126 seats are scheduled to be held on April 9, with the BJP-led NDA seeking to retain power for another term.
