At the end of the day, the people of the Valley celebrated the victory of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) and its allies, marking a significant political shift in the region. With the National Conference securing 42 seats, Congress winning 6, and CPI(M) gaining 1, they reached the majority mark together. This election outcome is a clear signal from the electorate, indicating a wise rejection of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other regional parties, who failed to resonate with the majority. The voters have decisively chosen a secular alternative, underscoring their commitment to unity and inclusivity in a diverse landscape.

As Jammu and Kashmir elects its government for the first time in a decade, the collective voice of the people has resonated powerfully through the ballot box. With a commendable overall voter turnout of 63%, spread across three phases, the 2024 Assembly elections stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of democracy in the region.

A Deeply Participatory Process

The phases of the election reflected strong participation across regions. In Phase 1, the Chenab Valley and South Kashmir witnessed a significant turnout of 61.38%, despite the challenges faced in these areas. This phase highlighted how areas historically marked by turbulence are now deeply invested in shaping their future. National Conference (NC), PDP, and BJP all vied for prominence, with familiar names like Sakina Itoo of NC and Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami (CPI(M)) leading intense contests.

Phase 2 took the democratic process to Central Kashmir and the Pir Panjal region, where the turnout was slightly lower at 57.31%. Nonetheless, this phase was crucial, with key constituencies like Budgam and Rajouri hosting high-profile candidates like Omar Abdullah and Syed Altaf Bukhari. The electoral race here was a clear reflection of Jammu and Kashmir’s regional diversity, with NC performing strongly in Srinagar and BJP gaining ground in Rajouri and other regions of Pir Panjal.

Finally, Phase 3 marked a dramatic close with the highest turnout—68.72%—in the strategically important areas of North Kashmir and Jammu Centre. From Sopore to Baramulla, and from Handwara to Gulmarg, voters showed up in large numbers, underscoring the region’s political awakening. The BJP consolidated its strength in the Jammu region, continuing to appeal to its core base, while the People’s Conference made significant inroads in North Kashmir.

The Significance of Voter Turnout

Voter turnout is not just a measure of electoral engagement but a powerful barometer of public confidence in the political process. This election’s turnout—63% overall—is a clear indication that despite years of political uncertainty, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are deeply invested in shaping their own destiny. The fact that more than half of the electorate actively participated, even in regions historically affected by violence, points to a reinvigorated democratic culture.

This level of engagement is a message that the voice of the common man is alive and thriving in the region. From the high-altitude villages of Poonch to the urban centers of Srinagar and Anantnag, voters came forward not just to cast a ballot, but to be heard, to influence, and to change.

A Government Reflecting the People’s Will

The election results point toward a closely contested race, with JKNC and its allies emerging as the clear winners. The Congress-NC combination leads the pack, followed closely by BJP, with PDP and the People’s Conference also vying for influence. What this indicates is a vibrant political landscape, where regional aspirations and party loyalties are diverse and robust.

The absence of a clear majority for any one party sets the stage for coalition-driven governance, underscoring the need for cooperation, compromise, and dialogue in government formation. It is a reflection of how democracy can bridge divides—regional, ideological, and ethnic—to create a government that truly represents the collective will of the people.

In such a scenario, upholding the verdict of the voters becomes paramount. The newly formed government will be a product of various political ideologies coming together, reflecting the nuanced choices made by the people across the three phases of the election. It is imperative that all political stakeholders honor this verdict with integrity, humility, and a sense of responsibility to the electorate.

Embracing the Future

As Jammu and Kashmir steps into a new era, these elections mark more than just a political exercise; they signify a renewed contract between the governed and those who govern. Every vote cast is a testament to the belief in change, progress, and the ability of the democratic system to deliver justice, peace, and prosperity.

The way forward will undoubtedly be complex, with regional and national dynamics at play. However, as the people of Jammu and Kashmir have shown through their spirited participation, they are ready for a new chapter, one defined by democratic values, pluralism, and a shared future.

In this critical moment, it is the duty of all stakeholders—political leaders, bureaucrats, and citizens alike—to uphold the sanctity of this process, to respect the diverse opinions expressed through the ballot box, and to work together for a better tomorrow. The people have spoken; now, it is up to their leaders to listen, respond, and govern with wisdom, compassion, and vision.

Democracy has been reaffirmed in Jammu and Kashmir, and with it, the enduring power of the people to shape their own destiny. This is their victory, and it must be cherished, respected, and upheld for generations to come.
