Buzzbytes Dec 29: In 2023, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed significant milestones as the Supreme Court endorsed the abrogation of Article 370, leading to the formation of two union territories. The Narendra Modi-led government also achieved a diplomatic feat by hosting a crucial G20 meeting in the Kashmir Valley.

Despite these accomplishments, the year concluded without elections for the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, and scheduled urban local body and panchayat polls were postponed.

The Supreme Court’s approval of the government’s decision on Article 370 sparked reactions from regional parties, with the National Conference and the PDP expressing determination to continue advocating for the restoration of special status.

While political figures voiced disappointment, the general public’s response remained relatively subdued. Meanwhile, the BJP celebrated the verdict and gained praise for hosting the G20 meeting, contributing to the development of Srinagar.

Positive strides were made in Kashmir’s security situation, but delays in holding elections drew criticism. Notably, targeted attacks by terrorists persisted, affecting civilians and security forces in various incidents throughout the year. Despite these challenges, development initiatives, including infrastructure improvements and environmental measures, were implemented in the region.
