Srinagar,October 5: The health department in Kashmir has taken a decisive stance against tobacco use in public places, amassing fines exceeding Rs 1.5 lakh from offenders in 2023, as disclosed by Director Health Kashmir, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather.

During a media sensitization workshop under the national tobacco control program, Dr. Rather emphasized that the campaign for a tobacco-free environment is not just a legal matter but a vital public health initiative. He underscored the pivotal role of public support in achieving this objective.

Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather highlighted the crucial importance of public backing in the battle against tobacco use. He emphasized that no program or effort can succeed without active public involvement. The substantial fines collected reflect the community’s willingness to comply with tobacco control regulations.

Furthermore, Dr. Rather drew attention to the broader issue of smoking within households, which can negatively impact children and elderly family members. He cited a recent study, conducted in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, revealing that out of 70,000 individuals, 50,000 were intravenous drug users, with many having a history of smoking, including minors.

Dr. Rather stressed the interconnectedness of tobacco use and substance abuse, advocating for a comprehensive approach to address both concerns.

In response to the growing problem of substance abuse, particularly among youth, he announced the establishment of Additional Treatment Facilities (ATF) centers in every district of the valley. These centers are dedicated to offering essential support and intervention to those in need, providing a holistic approach to combat addiction and promote healthier lifestyles.
