One year after the tragic terror attack at Baisaran Meadow on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 innocent lives, the picturesque “Mini Switzerland” of Pahalgam is proudly reclaiming its place as one of India’s most beloved tourist destinations.

The tourist spot that once fell silent is now vibrant again—with the laughter of families, the clip-clop of ponies, and the joy of visitors rediscovering Kashmir’s timeless beauty. This remarkable turnaround stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the effectiveness of strengthened security measures, and the unbreakable spirit of peace and hospitality that defines the Valley.

The attack on that fateful day in 2025, when armed terrorists targeted tourists enjoying the scenic Baisaran Valley, sent shockwaves across the nation and temporarily disrupted the region’s thriving tourism industry. Visitor numbers dipped sharply, with the Valley recording around 11.16 lakh tourists in 2025 compared to much higher figures in previous years. Hotels emptied, pony operators and guides faced hardships, and many tourist sites underwent safety reviews. Yet, in the face of adversity, Kashmir chose not to bow—but to bounce back with determination and grace.

Today, as the first anniversary approaches, the narrative is one of hope, recovery, and renewed confidence. Domestic tourists are returning in growing numbers, breathing fresh life into local businesses. Early trends for 2026 indicate a strong rebound, with projections suggesting that visitor arrivals could surpass previous records as the season progresses. The clouds of uncertainty have lifted, replaced by clear Himalayan skies and the warm smiles of locals welcoming guests.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been at the forefront of this revival, emphasising that security and tourism must go hand in hand. “Our government has taken comprehensive measures to strengthen security across all tourist destinations. Every previously restricted site is now open and operational with enhanced safeguards. We want every visitor to feel safe and welcomed in Kashmir,” he stated. The administration has also announced plans to fully reopen all sites by May and introduce nine new tourist destinations, expanding opportunities for visitors while ensuring sustainable growth.

Security has been significantly upgraded with increased personnel deployment, additional checkpoints, advanced surveillance, and round-the-clock patrolling. These proactive steps, combined with community support and successful events like the Amarnath Yatra, have helped restore faith among travellers. Visitors now speak openly about feeling secure while experiencing the region’s unparalleled charm.

Priya Sharma, a homemaker from Lucknow visiting Pahalgam with her family, shared her experience: “We were a little hesitant at first due to last year’s incident, but the visible security arrangements and the overall atmosphere have been extremely reassuring. The meadows are as green and beautiful as ever, the air is fresh, and the people here treat us like family.”

Her husband, Amit Sharma, added: “This trip is more than just a holiday—it’s a way of standing with the people of Kashmir and saying no to fear. The pony rides to Baisaran, the views of the Lidder River, and the warm hospitality have made this one of our best family experiences.”

Rajesh Kumar from Chandigarh, travelling with friends, echoed the sentiment: “We drove here without any worry. The security is professional and reassuring without being intrusive. Baisaran Meadow feels peaceful and majestic again. One year later, the resilience of this place is truly inspiring.”

Local stakeholders, who bore the brunt of the slowdown, are now optimistic. Mohammad Yaseen, a hotelier with over 30 years of experience in Pahalgam, said: “The period after the attack was challenging for all of us, but we never lost hope. Tourists are returning because they see genuine efforts for safety and experience the warmth of Kashmiriyat. This is not just about business—it is about healing together.”

Members of the Pahalgam Pony Owners Association highlighted the return of normalcy: “Our ponies were idle for too long, but now families are once again riding towards Baisaran and other scenic spots. Seeing children laugh and create memories fills us with joy.”

Government initiatives promoting Kashmir as a year-round destination, improved connectivity through better roads and rail services, and a focus on eco-friendly tourism are playing a key role in this resurgence. While international arrivals are gradually picking up, domestic tourists continue to lead the revival, reaffirming Kashmir’s enduring appeal.

As the anniversary of the Baisaran attack is observed with solemn remembrance, Pahalgam and the entire Kashmir Valley send a clear message: terror cannot dim the light of peace, beauty, and human resilience. The meadows are blooming again, the rivers flow with renewed vigour, and the mountains stand tall as silent witnesses to a region that refuses to be defined by violence.

A group of young tourists from New Delhi summed it up: “We came to honour the memory of those we lost by choosing joy and connection over fear. Pahalgam has welcomed us with open arms. We are leaving with full hearts and a promise to return.”

In reclaiming its glory, Kashmir is not only rebuilding its tourism industry but also reaffirming its identity as a land of natural splendour, warm hospitality, and enduring peace. The journey ahead is bright—and paradise is ready once again.
