All is not well within Kashmiri society. The moral degradation of Kashmiri society is happening at a fast pace. Fraudsters are on prey. Stabbing by youths is happening rampantly. Men are falling prey to honeytrap with a single call.
The bigger reality is that the respect towards women – for many educated men also – stops at their mothers and sisters. We are facing a strange predicament now. The gun violence by the terrorists has been effectively controlled by the government. But a section of youths are now indulging in violence by using knives to stab those who they are angry with, for some reason.
The suicides are happening at an alarming pace. Drug addiction among youths is at an all time high. It is extremely unfortunate that Kashmir is emerging as the drug hub of India.
Our society has become vulnerable to crimes
The society of Kashmir needs to ask itself a serious question. The decades of radicalisation that we have given a free ride in Kashmir has made us vulnerable to all sorts of crimes. We have followed the path of hate and terror without even questioning. The nature of love has taken a back seat. Religion which we all respect but it has been used as a toll by devil minds to make our youth go astray.
Government is taking necessary action against criminal elements but the larger reality is that society has to reform itself in order to achieve peace and prosperity.
Acid attacks, honey traps, knive attacks and suicides are thus the order of day. Fraudsters are thus on a spree.
Examples are evident. Police have busted a “honey trap” gang and arrested four members who allegedly extorted money from people, officials said.
Defrauding has become common
Two gang members, including a woman, posed as police officers while another as a journalist, they said.
“A gang of fraudsters has been busted that was operating in Mehjoor Nagar area of Srinagar. This gang was deceiving, cheating and extorting from people throughout the city,” a police spokesperson said.
Fake Journalists are also on prowl. Police have arrested a journalist for militancy funding in Srinagar.
“A Self-styled journalist Muzamil Zahoor Malik of Indergam Pattan arrested for terror funding. He received terror funds in his bank account made on forged documents/fake identity. FIR 20/2023 u/s 13,18,40 of UAPA & 120B,121,124,124A of IPC in Nowgam PS. Five accused have been arrested,” Srinagar police tweeted.
War against drug addiction
As many as 217 drug peddlers have been arrested and narcotics worth over ₹7 crore recovered so far this year in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on June 1.
As part of its crackdown on drug peddling, the Baramulla police has registered 144 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the first five months of this year, a police official said.
With dastardly acts of crime against weaker sections especially women and children witnessing surge it looks the world as a whole is witnessing degradation in morality. Moral degradation in Kashmir too is of much concern.
In present times the moral degradation all over the length and breadth of Kashmir is posing a serious threat to the well being of the people. Vices like Corruption, poverty, human rights violation, Rape, environment pollution, repression of women and children are the results of this growing moral degradation. So, to combat all these problems, a visionary moral development programme and its proper practice has become the need of the hour.
Increase in crimes by women
Crimes by women are growing. Over a dozen men in Jammu and Kashmir were conned by a 30-year-old woman who married each of them only to flee with mehr money and gold.
Shaheen Akhtar, 30, was arrested last week in Nowshera town in Rajouri. She was taken into custody based on a complaint filed by Mohammed Altaf Mar, who accused Shaheen of duping him after marriage.
Moral degradation has also seriously hit every section in the valley of Kashmir over the past few years. We have been continuously witnessing growing drug addiction, vulgarity, loss of respect for elders are some of the evident realities that once pious Kashmiri society is fast losing its moral fabric. All this is impacting our growth as a society.
The horror is evident although the Government is taking necessary action.
Order regarding sharp-edged weapons
Authorities on Friday banned the sale, purchase, and carrying of ‘sharp-edged weapons’ in public places in view of several stabbing incidents in Srinagar. The ban was announced by Srinagar District Magistrate Mohammad Aijaz Asad, an official spokesman said.
The decision was taken apparently as a result of several recent incidents of stabbings reported from Qamarwari, Bemina, Kralpora, Batmaloo, Nowhatta, Kothibagh, Rambagh, among other places, as reported by the Senior SP.
Moral degradation is a complex and serious disease with devastating long term consequences. It refers to the process of declining from a higher to a lower level of morality and is seen as preceding or concomitant with the decline in quality of life as well as the decline of societies and nations. It has destroyed individuals, families, dynasties and nations alike from within. It starts slowly with seemingly harmless choices by some individuals but then it spreads like an epidemic affecting the society at large.
The need of the time is that the society of Kashmir questions itself. Glamorizing violence and terror along with extremism has destroyed Kashmir.
