In an effort to promote interdisciplinary dialogues surrounding gender issues, the Shaikh-ul-Aalam Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies (SACMS) at Kashmir University (KU) inaugurated a two-day international seminar titled ‘Gender: An Interdisciplinary Perspective.’ The event, which commenced on Wednesday, brought together academics, scholars, and students from both national and international institutes, fostering a diverse exchange of ideas.
Prof Mohammad Yousuf Ganai, Dean of the School of Social Science at KU, highlighted the importance of approaching gender from diverse perspectives. He emphasized the need to explore gender in relation to various aspects such as religion, sufism, social justice, judiciary, language, literature, feminism, theological ecofeminism, discourse, deconstruction, and women’s education.
During her keynote address, Dr Garima Dalal from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, underscored the role of higher educational institutions in fostering gender inclusivity. She urged universities to integrate inclusive policies and conduct awareness sessions to contribute significantly to building a more equitable society.
Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai, Coordinator of Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy at KU, highlighted the timely significance of the seminar and stressed the valuable insights that religious teachings can bring to the discourse. The seminar aims to formulate strategies for integrating interdisciplinary perspectives on gender into educational curricula.
Prof Aadil Amin Kak, Chairman of SACMS at KU, described the seminar as a distinctive journey into gender exploration. He urged participants to reshape the comprehension of gender, positioning the event as a catalyst for transformative change, promoting diversity, and dismantling barriers that sustain inequality.
The inaugural session was followed by two technical sessions, featuring scholars from various disciplines presenting papers both in offline and online modes. The seminar proceedings were conducted by Dr Saltanat, faculty at SACMS, and Dr Ifshana Qayoom, Research Fellow at SACMS, presented the vote of thanks. Dr Muhammad Ilham, faculty at SACMS, coordinated the entire event.
