Srinagar, Oct 09 (Buzzbytes): The higher regions of Jammu & Kashmir were blanketed with a fresh layer of snowfall, while the plains experienced continuous rainfall on Monday, causing a noticeable drop in temperatures across the Union Territory.

Gulmarg, renowned for its ski resorts, Kupwara in the northern district, Banihal area, and various other parts of Jammu & Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall.

Following a day of persistent overcast conditions, the plains of Kashmir were drenched by the rains, contributing to the decline in temperatures.

Notably, meteorologists have predicted a two-day wet spell beginning today, with the peak activity expected during the night between Monday and Tuesday.

Sonum Lotus, Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), informed the media that intermittent rains in different parts of J&K and isolated snowfall are likely to continue.

He added that weather conditions are expected to gradually improve starting from Tuesday morning.

Deputy Director of MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, mentioned that both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to significantly decrease from this point onwards.

In Srinagar, the mercury settled at 26.5 degrees Celsius, marking a decrease of 2.6 degrees Celsius compared to yesterday.

Gulmarg recorded a temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam saw 23.9 degrees Celsius, indicating drops of 0.9 and 3.0 degrees Celsius respectively compared to Sunday.

In Kupwara, the mercury settled at 24.1 degrees Celsius today.

Deputy Director MeT further disclosed the possibility of another wet spell from October 14 in Jammu & Kashmir. He stated, “The weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy from October 14, with both rain and snowfall anticipated until October 17.”

It’s worth noting that J&K experienced a prolonged dry spell throughout September. In the past two months, August and September, there was a 25 percent deficit in rainfall compared to the normal precipitation of 280.6 mm, with the Union Territory receiving 209.6 mm of rainfall. (Buzzbytes)
