NEW DELHI, January 22, 2024Amit Chakravarty, the head of human resources at NewsClick, has withdrawn his petition against his arrest under the anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), from the Supreme Court on Monday. In a development earlier this month, a Delhi court had granted permission for Chakravarty to become an approver in the case related to NewsClick, which faced UAPA charges over alleged involvement in spreading pro-China propaganda in exchange for money. The individual petitions filed by Amit Chakravarty and NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha challenging their arrests under the anti-terror law were scheduled for a hearing before a bench led by Justice B R Gavai. The withdrawal of Chakravarty’s petition adds a new layer to the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the UAPA charges against NewsClick. The court will likely consider the implications of this withdrawal as it continues to address the legal intricacies of the case.
