Jammu, Jan 2: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday clarified that there will be no general increase in electricity tariffs across the Union Territory during the current financial year, seeking to allay public apprehensions over a possible hike in power charges.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes amid concerns over an additional 20 per cent charge on electricity consumption during morning and evening peak hours. Addressing the issue, the Chief Minister’s Office said that no changes have been approved.
“For 2025–26, there is no general increase in electricity tariffs across J&K and the Time of Day (ToD) tariff remains unchanged,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
Omar Abdullah said the government remains committed to prioritising people’s welfare and ensuring that electricity remains affordable for households and consumers across the Union Territory.
The clarification follows a petition by the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (JKPDCL) before the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission, seeking an increase in the existing 20 per cent surcharge imposed on consumers during morning and evening peak hours. The Chief Minister’s statement makes it clear that no such hike will be implemented during the current financial year.
