Jammu, :Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday directed the Power Development Department to adopt strict safety measures for field staff and work towards achieving the goal of “zero casualty” among linemen while on duty.
The Chief Minister made the remarks while presiding over the Lineman Diwas celebration organised by Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited in Jammu.
The event recognised the contribution of linemen as the frontline technical workforce responsible for maintaining electricity supply across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during emergencies and natural calamities.
Addressing the gathering, Omar Abdullah described the occasion as an important and long-overdue recognition of the services rendered by linemen.
“Power makes virtually all other aspects of our lives function. Government services like healthcare, education and irrigation do not work without electricity,” he said, adding that behind every illuminated home or office stands the dedicated work of linemen.
Calling them the “actual foot soldiers and indispensable workforce of the power department,” the Chief Minister praised their commitment in challenging situations.
“You brave adverse conditions like war and natural calamities. You put your lives on the line of duty just like our brave defence forces,” he said, referring to their role during Operation Sindoor and the 2025 floods.
Highlighting safety concerns, the Chief Minister emphasised that the government is committed to protecting every lineman working in the power sector.
“We have to aim for achieving the goal of zero casualty of linemen during work. The entire J-K government and the power department will ensure the safety of each individual lineman,” he said.
He stressed that merely procuring safety equipment is not sufficient and directed the department to ensure that protective gear reaches field staff and that they receive proper training to use it effectively.
The Chief Minister also instructed senior engineers and officers to strictly enforce safety protocols and standard operating procedures while carrying out power-related operations.
“Officers on duty must ensure strict adherence to safety precautions and SOPs. There should be no room for carelessness or a hurried approach,” he said.
During the event, Omar Abdullah felicitated 20 linemen with certificates and mementoes in recognition of their dedication and service.
He also suggested introducing cash rewards from the next edition of Lineman Diwas to make the recognition more meaningful.
Speaking on the occasion, Gurpal Singh, Managing Director of JPDCL, said the corporation currently provides electricity services to more than 12 lakh consumers across the Jammu region.
