The Nagaland Statehood Day was celebrated at the Raj Bhawan in Jammu on Friday, following the theme of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat,’ as reported by an official spokesperson. However, Abdullah, a former chief minister of J&K, highlighted the irony in celebrating the statehood day of another region while Jammu and Kashmir marked its “Union Territory Day” after being downgraded from statehood.

In a post on X, Abdullah expressed his perspective, stating, “Irony comes to die in J&K. Here we celebrate Nagaland Statehood day in Raj Bhavan, Jammu while celebrating ‘Union Territory Day’ when it comes to J&K. Talk about rubbing salt into the wounds of the people here.”

The criticism stems from the historical bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories, J&K and Ladakh, on August 5, 2019, when the Centre abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution. The J&K administration marked the Union Territory day on October 31. Abdullah’s remarks underscore the sensitivity surrounding the political changes and the sentiments of the people in the region.
