NEW DELHI Buzzbytes, Dec 20: Members of the INDIA bloc, including suspended MPs, gathered in a demonstration at the Gandhi statue within the Parliament premises on Wednesday. The protest primarily revolves around the recent suspension of 141 Opposition MPs and the alleged ‘security breach’ incident that transpired on December 13.

The protest was spearheaded by prominent figures from the Congress party, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary leader Sonia Gandhi taking the lead. Several opposition MPs, including those who faced suspension, joined the demonstration to voice their grievances.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram expressed concerns, stating, “There appears to be a growing trend of intolerance. The approach seems to be authoritarian, suggesting that if dissent isn’t silenced, members will be ousted, given the majority control. The attempt seems to be converting Parliament into a mere rubber stamp.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor remarked, “This episode marks a regrettable milestone in our parliamentary history. It tarnishes the essence of our democracy. Ministerial accountability to Parliament is paramount. The Home Minister’s absence and silence on the security breach reflect a reluctance for dialogue, pushing for unilateral decisions.”
Adding to the chorus, Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized, “The attempt to silence and suspend members, creating a semblance of dictatorship within a democratic framework, is unacceptable. We’ll take our grievances to the people. The suspension must be reconsidered, and a comprehensive discussion initiated in the House. I’m awaiting a response from the Vice President regarding my communication.”
During the protest, opposition MPs prominently displayed banners with the slogan ‘save democracy’. This mass suspension of 141 MPs from Parliament marks an unprecedented event in recent times.
