Planting Trees Can Beautify the Heart of Srinagar

Development is inevitable for every country. Only a few nations today are economically sound and capable of generating substantial employment through effective and beneficial schemes. These countries have strong sectors that offer well-paying opportunities to educated and skilled youth. As we move forward, many countries are likely to continue on the path of development.

Today, we have immense, effective, and useful communication tools that facilitate the exchange of ideas from one corner of the world to another. Most trade-related dealings are now carried out through virtual means such as emails, WhatsApp, and video conferencing. For the upliftment of any country, development plays a crucial role in strengthening the economy. The development of roads, transport systems, trade and commerce, along with proper city management while keeping environmental concerns in mind, is essential.

The government has constituted separate bodies to manage environmental issues and regularly issues guidelines for environmental protection. Development does not merely mean the construction of giant tunnels, large buildings, long railway tracks, widened roads, or dams. While development is the need of the hour, it must be carried out with proper planning, effective management, and coordination among various agencies, keeping environmental sustainability at the core. An intellectual and administrative framework within the government continuously addresses public grievances and ensures the availability of essential facilities.

In this article, I wish to highlight the importance of planting trees in cities and major business hubs, especially in areas with heavy traffic movement. With rising demands, traffic flow is increasing day by day, leading to environmental pollution. Factories in the manufacturing sector also release significant pollutants into the air, water, and soil. While such activities cannot be halted overnight, environmental damage can certainly be minimized through active participation in environmental protection initiatives. In this regard, the government administration deserves appreciation for acknowledging environmental challenges and implementing necessary measures.

The environment plays a vital role in sustaining life. It includes our surroundings—plants, water bodies, animals, birds, air, soil, and other natural elements. However, development in the form of roads, bridges, buildings, railway tracks, airports, factories, industries, and hydroelectric projects has, in many ways, adversely affected the environment.

One major cause of environmental degradation is the cutting of trees during road widening and railway construction. This results in soil erosion—the loss of the fertile top layer of soil—which in turn affects agricultural productivity and increases the risk of flash floods, landslides, and other natural hazards.

How to Maintain Temperature in Cities

Cities are busy business hubs that enhance the economic strength and visual appeal of a country, state, or district. However, rising vehicular emissions have led to an increase in urban temperatures. Greenhouse gases released by vehicles significantly contribute to this phenomenon, and cities are among the worst affected.

Effective urban management is therefore crucial. While planning development, authorities must prioritize environmental cleanliness, protection of water bodies, improvement of air quality, and efficient drainage systems. These factors must be carefully considered during road expansion, sewage installation, and the management of solid waste generated by hospitals, commercial establishments, and households.

Planting trees is one of the most effective ways to reduce urban temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance the overall beauty of cities. Trees act as natural air purifiers and provide shade, thereby reducing the heat island effect. Additionally, eco-friendly transportation should be encouraged. The use of e-rickshaws must be expanded, especially when only 314 e-rickshaws are currently operating in the city (source: Daily Sheherbeen).

In conclusion, planting trees is a sustainable and practical solution to beautify the heart of Srinagar while safeguarding the environment. Ensuring balanced development that harmonizes economic growth with environmental preservation is a shared responsibility of both the government and the citizens.
