Latest data shows Jammu and Kashmir ranks sixth nationally in tobacco prevalence, with over 20% of the population using it. Smoking tobacco affects 20.8% of adults—35.2% of men and 5.1% of women—while smokeless forms stand at 4.3%. Districts like Kupwara report even higher rates, far above many Indian regions.

The consequences hit hard locally. Tobacco drives 80-90% of lung cancers, now the second most common malignancy in Kashmir. Hookah, deeply rooted in culture, multiplies lung cancer risk up to sixfold compared to non-smokers. It worsens hypertension, heart disease, strokes, and tuberculosis outcomes, while second-hand smoke endangers half of households. Annually, thousands lose healthy years to tobacco-related disabilities, burdening families and healthcare.

Dr. Mir Mushtaq, Nodal Officer for the National Tobacco Control Programme in Kashmir, highlights the crisis: “The prevalence of smoking tobacco in the region stands at 20.8%, ranking it sixth in the country.” He stresses government efforts, noting thousands of fines issued over recent years for public smoking violations. Experts link high use to chronic stress, with many turning to cigarettes or hookah to cope.

Progress exists. Initiatives like Tobacco-Free Youth Campaigns target schools and villages. Communities in places like Sheikhgund Shangus have declared themselves tobacco-free, removing cigarette vendors collectively. SKIMS and health departments run awareness drives, reducing visible public smoking.

Quitting isn’t weakness—it’s strength. Stop today: breathe easier, lower cancer and heart risks, protect loved ones from second-hand harm. Kashmir’s beauty shines brighter without smoke clouds. Choose life over puffs—better health starts with one decision.
