The holy month of Ramadan will begin in Jammu and Kashmir from Thursday, after the crescent moon was sighted on Wednesday evening, the Grand Mufti of J&K, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, announced.
The declaration came after verified reports of moon sighting were received from several districts of the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region, followed by consultations with Islamic scholars representing different schools of thought.
“The crescent has been sighted. After consulting with my brothers from various schools of thought, it is declared that the holy month of Ramadan will commence tomorrow,” Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said.
Soon after the announcement, mosques and shrines across the Valley echoed with special prayers, while families prepared for Sehri and the first Roza of the month. Markets in Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla and Jammu saw late-evening activity as people stocked essentials ahead of the dawn meal.
Calling Ramadan a month of reflection and service, the Grand Mufti urged people to look beyond rituals and focus on compassion.
“This is a month of self-discipline, prayer and empathy. Remember those who are struggling. Serving humanity and helping the needy is among the most meaningful ways to seek Allah’s pleasure in Ramadan,” he said.
Religious leaders also appealed for maintaining communal harmony, patience in daily life, and special care for neighbours, travellers and those facing hardship.
With Ramadan beginning, special night prayers (Taraweeh) will start across mosques, and arrangements have been put in place at major shrines to facilitate worshippers. Authorities have also assured smooth arrangements for electricity, water supply and essential commodities during the holy month.
