Another tragic accident at HMT Highway near the Police Station in Srinagar has left a woman critically injured, bringing yet another grim reminder of the growing concerns about road safety in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite repeated incidents and public outcry, the measures taken by the transport department and traffic authorities remain largely superficial.

The transport department’s efforts, though well-intentioned, have failed to address the root causes of these recurring tragedies. Meanwhile, traffic police seem more focused on public relations through photo sessions and video messages than on meaningful action. The reality on the ground paints a stark picture: inadequate enforcement of traffic laws, poorly maintained roads, and an alarming lack of accountability.

It’s time for the authorities to go beyond cosmetic measures and tackle the issue head-on. Window dressing, in the form of social media campaigns and token traffic drives, cannot suffice. What we need are sustained efforts, including stricter enforcement of speed limits, better road signage, improved pedestrian crossings, and consistent monitoring of road conditions.

Additionally, the government must engage in a collaborative approach with urban planners, road safety experts, and the public to implement long-term strategies. Awareness campaigns should go hand-in-hand with practical steps to ensure safety for all road users.

This latest accident is a wake-up call for Srinagar’s authorities to shed complacency and take decisive action. Human lives are at stake, and the time for mere optics is over. It is high time we demand accountability and real change before more lives are lost.
