SKUAST-K Organises Capacity Building Workshop on Agriculture Carbon Markets

Srinagar, August 21, 2025: The Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, in collaboration with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), London, and the Voluntary Carbon Market Initiative (VCMi), organised a capacity building workshop on “Agriculture Carbon Markets under CCTS Standards.”

The event was inaugurated by Prof. A.H. Mughal, Dean, Faculty of Forestry, in the presence of Dr. Mohan Reddy, Senior Project Coordinator, Climate Change Group, IIED London. In his inaugural address, Prof. Mughal highlighted the pivotal role of Agriculture Carbon Markets in advancing climate change mitigation and adaptation. He stressed that integrating carbon market mechanisms into agriculture can not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also strengthen the resilience of farming systems, thereby ensuring sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

The proceedings were moderated by Dr. Peerzada Ishtiyak Ahmad, who also facilitated interactive discussions among the participants. The workshop witnessed the participation of officers from line departments, heads of divisions, and a distinguished group of scientists from various units of the university.

The workshop aimed at enhancing the capacities of frontline officers from horticulture, agriculture, and scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of SKUAST-K. Participants were introduced to the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) and the Agriculture Sub-Registry at the national level, with special emphasis on methodologies for horticulture plantations, soil carbon enhancement, and allied practices.

Dr. Mohan Reddy conducted a technical session, offering valuable insights into emerging opportunities in carbon markets and their potential applications in agriculture, horticulture, and allied sectors. The event concluded with remarks and a vote of thanks by Dr. N.A. Pala.
