The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 marked a significant turning point in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. While some argue for its reinstatement, it is crucial to examine the positive changes that have occurred since its removal. This article aims to shed light on why Art 370 should not come back, highlighting the control of corruption, improved governance, and enhanced development in the region. Control on Corruption One of the most significant achievements since the abrogation of Art 370 is the control on corruption. The previous governments, particularly the National Conference and PDP, were notorious for their involvement in corrupt practices and backdoor appointments. However, with the central government’s intervention, these practices have been curbed, leading to a more transparent and accountable administration. Improved Performance of Government Employees Prior to abrogation, government employees in Jammu and Kashmir were notorious for their lackadaisical attitude towards work. Many would not even show up for duty for a single day in a week. However, since the removal of Art 370, there has been a noticeable change in their behavior. Government employees are now working regularly, ensuring the efficient functioning of public services and the delivery of essential amenities to the people. Transformed Behavior of Government Officials The abrogation of Art 370 has also brought about a positive change in the behavior of government officials. Previously, there were instances of arrogance and abuse of power by officials, leading to a sense of alienation among the people. However, with the central government’s focus on accountability and professionalism, the behavior of government officials has improved significantly. This has fostered a sense of trust and confidence among the citizens. Halt to Selling of MBBS Seats Another significant achievement since the abrogation is the halt to the selling of MBBS seats by the Hurriyat to their own people. This unethical practice deprived deserving students of opportunities and perpetuated a culture of nepotism. The central government’s intervention has put an end to this exploitative practice. UT Status: A Better Alternative The transformation of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a Union Territory (UT) has proven to be a better alternative. The UT status has allowed for more focused governance and streamlined decision-making processes. It has facilitated the implementation of development projects, resulting in the regular macadamization of roads and improved infrastructure. This has not only enhanced connectivity but also boosted economic growth and tourism in the region. Halt to Deception by Hurriyat Conference The abrogation of Art 370 has also put a stop to the Hurriyat Conference’s ability to hoodwink the people. The Hurriyat, known for its separatist agenda, often misled the public and incited violence. However, with the central government’s firm stance, their influence has significantly diminished, leading to a more peaceful and stable environment in Jammu and Kashmir. Conclusion The abrogation of Article 370 has brought about positive changes in Jammu and Kashmir, making a strong case for its non-reinstatement. The control of corruption, improved performance of government employees, transformed behavior of officials, halt to the selling of MBBS seats, better governance as a UT, regular infrastructure development, and the end of Hurriyat’s deception are all significant achievements that should be acknowledged and built upon. It is essential to focus on progress, accountability, and the overall well-being of the people, rather than reverting to a system that hindered growth and perpetuated corruption. ——————————— One of the most significant achievements since the abrogation of Art 370 is the control on corruption.
