World at Crossroads

BB Desk

The global order built after World War II is steadily eroding as wars and unilateral actions replace diplomacy and restraint. From the prolonged Russia–Ukraine conflict to the fragile and frequently violated ceasefire in Gaza, and the widening tensions involving Iran, the Middle East has become a volatile theatre with global implications. Simultaneously, civil wars in Sudan and Myanmar, alongside crises in Haiti and Somalia, illustrate how violence is increasingly normalized as a tool of power and political signaling.

This breakdown reflects the weakening of multilateral institutions and the selective application of international norms. Powerful states often bypass global mechanisms when inconvenient, undermining the credibility of institutions meant to safeguard peace. The consequences are severe: devastated cities, mass displacement, rising global prices, and growing mistrust among nations.

With nuclear proliferation and intensifying arms races, even a minor miscalculation could trigger catastrophic consequences. The world urgently requires renewed commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and collective security.

India is well placed to contribute to such an effort. Drawing on its long-standing commitment to non-violence and dialogue, and guided by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world as one family—New Delhi can advocate mediation, promote inclusive diplomatic forums, and support reforms in global institutions to reflect contemporary realities.

In an era where power politics threatens to overshadow cooperation, leadership rooted in dialogue and balance is essential. A renewed global peace initiative, supported by responsible powers like India, could help redirect humanity from conflict toward stability, development, and shared progress.
