Act Now on Climate

The unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures hitting 37°C in Srinagar on July 5, 2025, coupled with severe water scarcity across Jammu and Kashmir, has created unsafe conditions for students. The current summer vacation, ending July 7, falls short of ensuring their safety in schools lacking proper cooling and reliable drinking water. Extending the break by at least one week is critical to protect students from heatstroke and dehydration, especially in districts like Anantnag, Pulwama, Srinagar, & Kupwara where water shortages are acute.

Although no official order has been issued, the Education Minister’s pledge to reassess the situation by July 6 is a positive step. Yet, the urgency voiced by parents and students on platforms like X underscores the need for immediate action. Academic priorities can be balanced with student well-being by adjusting the calendar, such as shortening winter breaks, to address syllabus needs without risking health.

Still recovering from the April 2025 Pahalgam tragedy, the region calls for empathetic and decisive governance. We respectfully urge authorities to prioritize student safety by extending the summer break, closely monitoring weather and water conditions, and ensuring schools are prepared for a safe return. Prompt action will reflect a commitment to safeguarding Jammu and Kashmir’s youth amid this pressing climate and resource crisis.
