Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement at the inaugural ceremony of the Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, where he assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that he keeps the promises he makes, has rekindled the debate around the restoration of J&K’s statehood. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s expression of hope that the final promise of restoring statehood will soon be fulfilled reflects the sentiments of the people. However, the patience of the public is wearing thin, and the time for action is now.

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed transformative changes over the past few years—unprecedented infrastructure development, tourism revival, and improved governance. The Z-Morh Tunnel, which promises to connect regions year-round and boost tourism, is a testament to this. However, infrastructure alone cannot heal the emotional and political wounds of a people who yearn for dignity, representation, and agency. The “Dil Ki Doori” that PM Modi pledged to erase remains incomplete without restoring the democratic identity of Jammu and Kashmir.

It is commendable that free and fair elections were held and that the gap between Delhi and Srinagar has been addressed in developmental terms. Yet, statehood is not a mere political concession; it is the rightful status of a region with a history, culture, and aspirations. The people of J&K should not have to wait indefinitely for promises made in the heat of political commitment to be realized at the convenience of policymakers.

The people of J&K have endured years of uncertainty and conflict. They now seek a return to normalcy, where their elected representatives can govern without the shadow of central control. The restoration of statehood is not just a matter of fulfilling a promise but also a step towards trust-building and empowerment.

As CM Omar Abdullah rightly pointed out, the people are watching. They appreciate progress but demand more. The slogan of “Dil Ki Doori” must evolve into “Dil Ka Rishta.” The people of J&K cannot remain content with symbolic gestures when their identity and future as a state remain unresolved.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly proven his ability to take bold decisions. Now, it is time to translate assurances into action. The restoration of statehood is not a favor; it is a responsibility. The people of J&K are no longer willing to wait for promises to materialize at the “right time.” They demand it now—because reconciliation and progress cannot thrive without trust, and trust cannot grow without fulfilling commitments.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is a pathway to connectivity, but the road to the hearts of J&K’s people lies in the restoration of their dignity and statehood. It’s time to bridge not just geographical distances but the emotional and political gap as well. The nation watches as Jammu and Kashmir awaits its rightful place in the democratic fabric of India.
