In a historic move, the cabinet has given the green signal to the New Education Policy, bringing about a significant transformation in the educational landscape after a span of 34 years. The noteworthy features of the new policy encompass a comprehensive restructuring of the schooling and college education system. Here are the key highlights:
**Foundational Stage (5 Years):**
1. Nursery @ 4 Years
2. Jr KG @ 5 Years
3. Sr KG @ 6 Years
4. Std 1st @ 7 Years
5. Std 2nd @ 8 Years
Preparatory Stage (3 Years):
6. Std 3rd @ 9 Years
7. Std 4th @ 10 Years
8. Std 5th @ 11 Years
Middle Stage (3 Years):
9. Std 6th @ 12 Years
10. Std 7th @ 13 Years
11. Std 8th @ 14 Years
Secondary Stage (4 Years):
12. Std 9th @ 15 Years
13. Std SSC @ 16 Years
14. Std FYJC @ 17 Years
15. Std SYJC @ 18 Years
Special and Important Changes:
1) Board exams will be conducted only in the 12th class, and the MPhil program will be discontinued.
2) The traditional 10th board exams are eliminated.
3) Education up to the 5th standard will be delivered in mother tongue, local language, and national language, with other subjects taught as separate subjects.
4) Semester-based examinations will be introduced from the 9th to 12th class.
5) The 5+3+3+4 formula will be adopted for school education.
6) College degrees will be of 3 and 4 years, with certificates awarded in the first year, diplomas in the second year, and degrees in the third year.
7) Students opting for higher education will pursue a 4-year degree, enabling them to complete an MA in one year.
8) Students with an MA degree can directly pursue a PhD.
9) Gross enrollment ratio in higher education is targeted to reach 50 percent by 2035.
10) Flexible pathways: Students can take breaks during a course to pursue other interests.
11) Uniform rules for all institutions, including government, private, and deemed universities.
The reforms extend to higher education, emphasizing graded academic, administrative, and financial autonomy. E-courses in regional languages, development of virtual labs, and the initiation of the National Educational Scientific Forum (NETF) are also key components of the transformative policy.
The overhaul is set to impact the 45 thousand colleges across the country, ushering in a new era of education with a focus on flexibility, multilingual learning, and seamless transitions between different educational stages.
