“Chief Justice Emphasizes Indigenous Essence of Indian Constitution at JU’s Constitution Day Celebration”

Jammu, Dec 14: Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir & Ladakh High Court asserted today that the Indian Constitution is not a mere assimilation of foreign ideas. Speaking at a Constitution Day event organized by the Department of Law, University of Jammu, in collaboration with Adhivakta Parishad Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, Justice Singh highlighted that while the words may be foreign, the values embedded in the Indian Constitution are inherently Indian.

The event, centered around the theme “Bhartiya Values and the Constitution,” featured discussions on the original hand-written Indian Constitution, adorned with illustrations of significant symbols such as Dharmachakra, Nataraj, Rani Lakshmi Bai, and depictions of various historical events.

Justice Singh underscored the foundation of justice based on the principle of Satyamev Jayate, fraternity on Vasudev Kutumbhkam, and equality grounded in the principle that no one is inferior—all are equal, marching towards prosperity.

Guest of honor Prof Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor of JU, elaborated on the Bhartiya values enshrined in the preamble of the Indian Constitution, emphasizing responsibility and righteousness as essential components of dharma.

Advocate General of J&K, DC Raina, another guest of honor, traced the historical journey of the constitution from its demand in 1930 to its enforcement.

Advocate Vikas Sharma, President of Adhivakta Parishad, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, provided a brief introduction at the beginning of the event.

The occasion also witnessed discussions by Prof Satinder Kumar, Head of the Department of Law, JU, and a vote of thanks delivered by Tahir Shamsi. Advocate Rohan Nanda conducted the proceedings.

Distinguished guests, including Justice Rahul Bhartti, Justice Vinod Chatterjee Koul, Retd Justice M L Manhas, Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Prof Prakash Antahal, Dr Vijay Saigal, faculty members, officers of the High Court, and legal practitioners, graced the event.
