Srinagar March 12, 2024In a fervent exchange of opinions, political figures in Kashmir, including PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, have raised alarms regarding the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by the BJP government.Mehbooba Mufti, in a pointed statement on Tuesday, accused the BJP of aligning with the Hindu Mahasabha’s two-nation theory through the enforcement of the CAA. She asserted that the urgency in implementing the act, despite its pending status in the Supreme Court, appears to be a strategic move to divert attention from perceived governmental shortcomings. In a post on X, Mufti declared, “77 years after partition, BJP is still wedded to the concept of the two-nation theory of Hindu Mahasabha. To further their agenda, they have thus implemented CAA to create another partition among our people.” She urged communities, especially Muslims, to remain cautious and avoid what she described as a potentially divisive trap.CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami echoed Mufti’s apprehensions, emphasizing that the CAA’s implementation contradicts the fundamental tenets of the Constitution. He argued that the Constitution’s foundation, designed to be irrespective of religion or creed, has been significantly violated through the enactment of the CAA. Tarigami criticized the move as a deliberate attempt to divert attention from governance and development failures, expressing concern that it may relegate minorities to second-class citizens. These outspoken statements by prominent political figures underscore a growing controversy and apprehension over the implications of the CAA. The ongoing debate surrounding the act remains a focal point in the political landscape, with critics highlighting issues of inclusivity and constitutional integrity.
