Dr. Mehnaaz Rehman, the esteemed Principal of Birla Open Minds International School (BOMIS), Pampore, and a prominent educationist, shares her insights in an exclusive interview with Rameez Makhdoomi for Heaven Mail.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Journey?

A:  I’ve received half of my education in Kashmir and the rest beyond the valley due to my marriage. My journey, with unwavering support from my parents, has been an ongoing process. I strongly believe in the ideals of learning, unlearning, and relearning. My life philosophy centers on the belief that one can never be a perfectionist but always a learner.

Q: How did you enter the field of education?

A: Interestingly, I hold an MBA degree. However, the corporate culture didn’t resonate with my heart as I felt a stronger inclination toward Research and Development. I’m passionate about exploring and contributing to societal development, which led me to the field of education.

Q: What is your take on NEP 2020 (National Education Policy 2020)?

A: NEP 2020, initiated by the Indian Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020, envisions a new educational system for the country. Most private schools have already embraced the core principles of NEP, emphasizing learner engagement. They’ve invested significantly in creating a creative educational environment. The real challenge lies in the implementation of NEP in government schools, especially upgrading existing infrastructure. NEP is set to revolutionize evaluation methods, with the grading system poised for a transformation under its guidance.

Q: What motivated you to join Birla Open Minds International School (BOMIS) in Pampore?

A: That’s an excellent question. Birla is a prestigious brand known for its core values. It respects leadership roles and offers academic leaders autonomy. My deep affection for Kashmir and my desire to explore the untapped potential of the region were instrumental in my decision to join BOMIS.

Q: Could you share some insights about the recent Basketball tournament organized by BOMIS Pampore?

A: Due to the prolonged impact of the Covid pandemic and being a relatively new school, BOMIS Pampore had remained somewhat restrained. With our extensive infrastructure spanning over 100 acres, we recognized the significance of sports in school life. To channel the students’ energy and foster a sports culture, we organized an inter-school Basketball tournament. Additionally, we’ve provided facilities for other sports like volleyball, roller skating, and Squash, offering unique opportunities for our students.

Q: What is the primary focus of BOMIS Pampore?

A: Our focus is comprehensive. We aim to nurture overall personality development, which encompasses not just spoken English but also mental health, emotional growth, academic excellence, skill development, and Home Sciences.

Q: What message would you like to convey to parents considering admission at Birla Open Minds International School?

A: I firmly believe that there should be no tests for children seeking admission, not just in our school but in any school. Every child possesses brilliance in their unique way. I encourage parents to explore our school from all angles and make an informed decision that aligns with their child’s potential and aspirations.
