The Division of Silviculture and Agroforestry (SAF) at the Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, Benhama Ganderbal, organized a one-day awareness programme titled “Exploration, Cultivation, and Conservation of Lesser-Known Wild Tree Species for Livelihood and Entrepreneurship Development.” The event was supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and was attended by over 50 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The programme commenced with introductory remarks by Dr. Nazir A. Pala, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Division of SAF. He highlighted the significance of the training for students and unemployed youth, emphasizing its potential to enhance livelihood opportunities through the cultivation of wild tree species.
Dr. G. M. Bhat, Professor and Head of the Division of SAF, delivered a comprehensive lecture on the importance of wild and lesser-known fruits in promoting sustainable livelihood activities. His presentation shed light on the economic and ecological benefits of these species.
Dr. Megna Rashid, Scientist at the Division of SAF, discussed the critical need for such training programmes. She elaborated on the challenges faced by farmers and other stakeholders in this domain, providing insights into innovative solutions.
As part of the programme, participants were taken on field visits to wild fruit nurseries and plantations. The exposure visits, led by the organizing scientists, included demonstrations of cultural practices for raising wild fruit species, offering hands-on experience to the attendees.
Dr. Pala expressed gratitude to MSME, SKUAST-K administration, Nodal Officer and Director of Planning and Monitoring, Prof. Haroon Naik, and Dean of the Faculty of Forestry for their unwavering support and guidance in making the programme a success.
This initiative underscores SKUAST-K’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices and empowering students and entrepreneurs through skill development and resource conservation.
