In a landmark event that beautifully blends military heritage, cultural pride, and economic aspiration, Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha inaugurated the magnificent ‘Shaurya Gatha’ Complex at SM Hill in Tangdhar, marking a new chapter in the transformation of border areas along the Line of Control (LoC) into vibrant tourism destinations.
The grand complex, developed with the support of the Indian Army’s Northern Command and Chinar Corps, includes a world-class Transit Management Centre, an immersive Pahari Cultural Centre, a majestic War Memorial, a state-of-the-art War Museum, and the picturesque Sadhna Café. These facilities are set to position Tangdhar-Karnah as one of the most unique and inspiring offbeat tourism destinations in Jammu & Kashmir.
Once known primarily for its strategic military importance and conflict, Tangdhar is now emerging as a powerful symbol of peace, resilience, and progress. Nestled amid snow-clad peaks, lush green meadows, and pristine streams, the region is witnessing a remarkable surge in tourism, further strengthened by attractions such as the ancient Sharda Temple, Azmat-e-Hind, and Vajr Gatha.
The towering War Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending Tangdhar and the nation’s borders. Every name engraved on its walls reflects extraordinary courage, valour, and unwavering devotion to the motherland.
The War Museum offers a comprehensive and immersive experience, chronicling the military history of the region through detailed exhibits, artefacts, and operational accounts from the wars of 1947-48, 1965, 1971, and the recent Operation Sindoor. Officials expect it to become a major attraction for tourists, students, researchers, historians, and patriots from across the country.
At the heart of the complex is the vibrant Pahari Cultural Centre, which showcases the rich history, lifestyle, traditions, folk art, music, and traditional attire of the Pahari community. Visitors will gain a rare and immersive insight into the timeless cultural identity of the border region.
The modern Transit Management Centre has been designed with world-class facilities to ensure smooth and comfortable travel for tourists and locals visiting Tangdhar. Adding warmth and scenic charm is the Sadhna Café, where visitors can relax with a cup of tea or coffee while soaking in breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic mountains and serene valleys.
Addressing the gathering, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha lauded the Indian Army, engineers, and local residents for completing this prestigious project within a short span of time. He described the Shaurya Gatha Complex as a fitting tribute to the nation’s bravehearts.
“The dedication of our forces and people is the true strength of the nation. The Shaurya Gatha Complex stands as a tribute to the valour and sacrifices of Indian soldiers. This initiative will create new opportunities for border-area tourism, battlefield tourism, homestays, local crafts, and youth entrepreneurship,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He emphasized that the project will generate substantial employment opportunities in hospitality, transport, handicrafts, local entrepreneurship, and allied sectors, while significantly strengthening the economy of this remote frontier region.
Manoj Sinha also highlighted key developmental initiatives, including the inclusion of seven villages of Tangdhar-Karnah under the Vibrant Village Programme, aimed at improving infrastructure, creating livelihood opportunities, and enhancing the quality of life. He stressed the transformative potential of the upcoming Sadhna Tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity and boost trade, education, healthcare, and disaster response in the area.
The Lieutenant Governor drew a stark contrast between the development and prosperity on this side of the LoC and the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK). He reaffirmed that Jammu & Kashmir is moving ahead with renewed confidence, peace, and all-round progress as an integral part of India.
He urged people across the country to visit the Shaurya Gatha Complex and explore the pristine beauty of Kupwara’s offbeat destinations. The Lieutenant Governor also appreciated the Indian Army’s contribution to the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir campaign and called for continued vigilance against narco-smuggling attempts from across the border. He praised the people, especially school students, for their strong support to the drug-free campaign.
The event was attended by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, GOC-in-C Northern Command; Lieutenant General Balbir Singh, GOC Chinar Corps; MLA Karnah Javaid Ahmad Mirchal; Additional Chief Secretary Ashwani Kumar; senior Army officers, including Major General Rakesh Nair and Brigadier Dharmendra Yadav, along with civil administration and police officials.
With this visionary initiative, Tangdhar-Karnah is set to become a shining example of how border villages can transform into thriving centres of tourism, heritage, and economic growth — embodying the true spirit of a New Jammu & Kashmir.
