New Delhi, May 31: General N.S. Raja Subramani, a highly decorated Army officer widely regarded as an expert on Pakistan and China, on Sunday assumed charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), becoming the country’s senior-most military commander with the crucial responsibility of advancing military reforms, strengthening jointness among the armed forces and implementing the long-pending theatre command structure.

Gen Subramani succeeded General Anil Chauhan, who demitted office on Saturday after completing his tenure as the Chief of Defence Staff.

Prior to assuming the country’s highest military position, Gen Subramani was serving as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He retired as the Vice Chief of Army Staff on July 31, 2025, after a distinguished military career spanning more than four decades.

Soon after taking charge, the new CDS outlined his priorities, stating that organisational reforms, transformation of the armed forces and strengthening integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force would remain at the centre of his agenda.

“Transformation of the armed forces and organisational reforms to enhance tri-services synergy and integration will be our primary focus,” Gen Subramani said in his first remarks after assuming office.

He also emphasised the need to accelerate the development, induction and integration of indigenous defence technologies and weapon systems into the armed forces, in line with India’s vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

“We will accelerate the development, induction and integration of indigenous weapons in our armed forces,” he said.

Reaffirming the military’s commitment to national security, the CDS said the armed forces have consistently demonstrated professionalism and operational decisiveness in safeguarding India’s national interests.

“We are committed to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. I assure the citizens of India that the armed forces will continue to serve the nation with dedication, courage, honour and professionalism,” he added.

One of the most significant responsibilities before Gen Subramani will be the implementation of the military theatre command model, considered one of the most ambitious defence reforms in independent India. The reform seeks to integrate the operational capabilities of the Army, Navy and Air Force under unified theatre commands to enhance efficiency, coordination and combat readiness.

Defence experts view the successful execution of theatre commands as a transformative step towards creating a more agile and technologically advanced military structure capable of responding effectively to evolving security challenges.

A graduate of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Gen Subramani was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985.

Throughout his illustrious career, he served in some of the most challenging operational environments across the country and held a wide range of command, staff and instructional appointments.

As a commanding officer, he led the 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino. He later commanded the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir and the 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector along sensitive borders.

He also commanded two Army corps formations, including one of the Indian Army’s premier strike corps deployed along the western front.

Gen Subramani served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and earlier held the appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Central Command, from March 2023 to June 2024.

His extensive staff and instructional assignments include serving as Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade, Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, Assistant Military Secretary in Army Headquarters, Deputy Commander of a Rashtriya Rifles Sector in Jammu and Kashmir, and Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence.

He also served as Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at the Eastern Command, Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and Chief of Staff at the Northern Command Headquarters.

Academically accomplished, Gen Subramani is an alumnus of the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, United Kingdom, and the National Defence College in New Delhi. He holds a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and an M.Phil. in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.

For his distinguished service to the nation, he has been awarded some of the country’s highest peacetime military honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

With his vast operational experience, strategic expertise and deep understanding of regional security dynamics, Gen N.S. Raja Subramani’s appointment comes at a crucial time when India is pursuing major military modernisation, indigenous defence production and enhanced preparedness along its borders.
