Srinagar, Dec 12: The Government of India is set to present the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill-2023 in the Lok Sabha today, aiming to provide 33 percent reservation for women in the Legislative Assembly of the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.
This bill, seeking to grant women a significant role in the J&K UT Assembly, is introduced separately as the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill-2023, passed in the special September session for women’s reservation, did not cover Jammu & Kashmir and Union Territory.
The move has garnered support from women leaders in Jammu & Kashmir, including National Conference Women’s wing President Shamima Firdous and Peoples Democratic Party leader Syed Asiya Naqash, who emphasized the importance of elected representatives in such decisions.
Kaneez Fatima, a leader from Peoples Conference, sees this political reservation as a significant stride towards the empowerment of women in J&K.
