Government’s Vigilance Against Deepfake Threat: Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Leads Multi-Stakeholder Discussion

In response to the growing threat of deepfake technology, Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronics & IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, spearheaded a comprehensive discussion with representatives from academia, industry bodies, and social media companies. Recognizing deepfake as a serious challenge to democracy and social institutions, the discussion outlined a collaborative effort between the government, academia, social media companies, and NASSCOM.

The four-pillared strategy identified during the interaction focuses on detection, prevention, reporting, and awareness of deepfake content. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the need for effective regulation, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will commence the process of drafting necessary regulations to combat the menace of deepfake. Public input will be sought through the MyGov portal, showcasing the government’s commitment to leveraging technology and fostering public awareness to counter the deepfake threat.
