Gulmarg is fast emerging as one of India’s top ski destinations, drawing adventure seekers and winter sports enthusiasts from across the country and abroad. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the government has taken notable steps to promote Gulmarg as a hub for skiing and snowboarding, appealing not only to Indian tourists but also to visitors from Europe.
The Chief Minister’s personal passion for skiing is well known, and his hands-on approach is evident in the focused development of winter sports infrastructure in Gulmarg. The addition of new ski drag lifts in the first phase of the Gondola project, along with steady upgrades to tourist facilities, has strengthened Gulmarg’s reputation as a world-class winter destination.
Advisor to the Chief Minister, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, and MLA Gulmarg, Mr. Farooq Ahmad Shah, have remained closely aligned with this vision. Together, they toured several states, encouraging travellers to choose Kashmir as their preferred holiday destination and Gulmarg as the ultimate winter retreat.
These coordinated efforts have delivered impressive results. Kashmir—especially Gulmarg—has witnessed a surge in winter tourism, marking a major success for the Omar Abdullah-led government.
The impact is visible on the ground, particularly for those dependent on the tourism economy. Hoteliers, guides, ponywalas, shopkeepers, and other stakeholders report renewed optimism and growing business. Many express hope that the current momentum will continue, sustaining economic activity and livelihoods across the region.
