The latest achievement in India’s space endeavors involves the successful detour of the Propulsion Module (PM) of Chandrayaan-3, a mission undertaken by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This unique experiment saw the PM transition from an orbit around the Moon to an orbit around Earth.

ISRO, in a statement on its official platform, shared details of the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s recent development. The PM’s journey from Lunar orbit to Earth’s orbit involved precision maneuvers, including an orbit-raising manoeuvre and a Trans-Earth injection manoeuvre, ultimately placing the PM in an Earth-bound orbit.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission, launched on July 14, 2023, aboard an LVM3-M4 vehicle from SDSC, SHAR, had a primary objective to demonstrate a soft landing near the lunar south polar region and conduct experiments using instruments on the Vikram Lander and Pragyaan rover.

On August 23, the Vikram Lander achieved a historic touchdown on the Moon, and subsequently, the Pragyan rover was deployed. The scientific instruments on both the Lander and Rover operated continuously for one lunar day, successfully fulfilling the defined mission objectives. The success of Chandrayaan-3 marks a significant stride in India’s space exploration journey, setting the stage for more ambitious lunar missions in the coming years.
