Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten on Saturday held wide-ranging talks in The Hague and agreed to elevate India-Netherlands relations to a “Strategic Partnership,” marking a major milestone in bilateral ties between the two countries.
The official talks were held at the Dutch Prime Minister’s residence, Catshuis, where both leaders discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, emerging technologies, renewable energy, maritime affairs and education.
Reflecting growing trust and convergence between the two nations, the two Prime Ministers also adopted an ambitious Roadmap for Strategic Partnership aimed at deepening collaboration across multiple sectors.
The leaders noted that India’s rapid economic growth and expanding innovation ecosystem present major opportunities for Dutch businesses and investors.
During the discussions, both sides expressed satisfaction over the progress made through regular high-level engagements and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation under the WAH framework — Water, Agriculture and Health.
The two countries agreed to further intensify cooperation on large-scale water management projects and expand collaboration in healthcare research, digital health, food safety and agriculture.
The leaders also underlined the importance of enhancing bilateral trade and investment ties and called for early signing and implementation of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement.
Both sides said cooperation in critical minerals would help build resilient and secure supply chains.
Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Jetten also stressed greater collaboration in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing.
The leaders encouraged organising joint hackathons involving youth from both countries to strengthen innovation partnerships.
In the renewable energy sector, the two sides agreed to expand cooperation in green hydrogen, biofuels, green shipping and maritime logistics to support sustainable development goals.
The leaders also welcomed new initiatives related to mobility partnerships and higher education cooperation.
Special emphasis was placed on an agreement between Nalanda University and University of Groningen aimed at strengthening academic collaboration.
Highlighting cultural ties, Modi thanked the Dutch government for facilitating the return of 11th-century Chola plates to India.
The two leaders also welcomed cooperation between Leiden University Library and the Archaeological Survey of India for research and preservation of historical artefacts.
Following the talks, India and the Netherlands signed 14 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding covering technology, green energy, trade, education, culture, mobility and water management.
Prime Minister Modi also invited Prime Minister Rob Jetten to visit India, which the Dutch leader accepted.
India and the Netherlands share strong bilateral relations based on democratic values and cooperation across diverse sectors including trade, innovation, climate action and maritime security.
