Srinagar, 10 Feb 2024:* Established in 1983, the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM and WS) has been a trailblazer in adventure and skill development in India. A collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Defence (GOI) and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, the institute is celebrated for its expertise in activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Trekking, Rescue Operations, Water Rafting, Paragliding, and Expeditions. Annually hosting around 1000 students from across India, JIM and WS nurtures talents, fostering a spirit of adventure and nationalism.With a core mission to expose youth to nature and kindle the spirit of adventure and nationalism, JIM and WS is currently conducting skiing courses at Sonamarg. The Basic Skiing Course No.63, featuring 69 students, and the Intermediate Skiing Course, with 23 students, draw participants from various parts of the country, including far-flung states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, Tripura, among others.JIM and WS courses operate at approximately 15% of the actual cost, with funding from various government departments: 75% by MoD, 15% by MYAS, and 10% by the Jammu and Kashmir Government. Committed to promoting adventure and community with nationalism, the institute recently hosted historic events in the valley, including the Lidderwat Trail Run and the Unity Run, attracting participants from the local community and beyond.Commencing on February 15th, JIM and WS will launch a Special Skiing Course at Pahalgam, providing enthusiasts with the chance to refine their skills on the pristine slopes. Additionally, the institute will conduct a Special Basic Mountaineering Course and specially designed adventure courses for school children and NCC participants.In alignment with government directives and a focus on promoting adventure tourism, JIM and WS has partnered with civil adventure enthusiasts, aiming to elevate the institute’s visibility. Ice Climbing Competitions and the Lidderwat series of trail runs are also on the agenda, set against the backdrop of the breathtaking valley.JIM and WS extends a warm invitation to media representatives to witness the dedication and skill development of their students in Sonamarg. By documenting and sharing these experiences, the institute aims to enhance its visibility and inspire a broader audience to embrace adventure.
